Types of construction services from construction companies
As a construction company, we know that defining construction services poses some difficulties, especially for individuals unfamiliar with the industry. Therefore, below we explain the terms: construction, reconstruction, renovation, and refurbishment based on the Act of 7 July 1994 Construction Law ([Journal of Laws of the Republic of Poland] Dz. U. 1994 No. 89 item 414, as amended).
The Act lists and regulates the following concepts:
- construction works;
- construction;
- reconstruction;
- renovation.
Why is it important to distinguish between these concepts? The type of construction work determines the specific construction services and scope of action, as well as the need for certain formalities or the lack thereof.

Construction work includes construction services such as the construction of a building itself and work involving the alteration, assembly, repair or demolition of an existing building. The Act, therefore, includes five types of activities among construction works.
Construction (building)
The term construction is defined as the execution of a structure, which is the building of a structure from scratch with a location at a specific place (construction site). Construction also includes such building services as:
- reconstruction,
- extension,
- the superstructure of a building.
Each of these activities requires a specific logistical background, as well as specific works to be carried out by the construction company on the space in question, resulting in the construction of a new building.
1. Reconstruction
the execution of construction takes place when a building in its entirety or in part does not fulfil its function. The reason may be excessive wear and tear or damage. In this case, repairing or replacing elements of a building means demolishing it for the most part or in its entirety and rebuilding the building in question;
2. Extension service
is understood to mean a change in the characteristic parameters of a facility. Thus, the volume, building area, length, width or number of storeys may change. These changes do not lead to the creation of any new structure. They involve the modification of an existing building.
3. Superstructure
is a type of construction involving the creation of a new part of an existing building, where the height and floor area of the building is increased.
4. Renovation
is construction services performed on an existing building. Renovation is intended to restore the original state of the building, and the same building materials as in the original state need not be used during the works.
5. Construction services
consists of works that lead to a change in the performance or technical parameters of an existing building. The volume, footprint, height, length, width or number of storeys, which is the case with extensions, may not be changed.
Then there are the construction services of ongoing maintenance – directed at maintaining an object in a condition compatible with the purpose of that facility.
The range of known construction services also includes building refurbishment. Refurbishment is the restoration of buildings, restoring their splendour or functionality. Typically, refurbishment work concerns historic buildings, where the smallest detail requires the approval of a conservation officer.
